St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Anglican Minister to join the Cathedral’s ministry team. The successful candidate will serve both as Assistant Curate (0.4 FTE) while also taking on the role of Cathedral Church Planter (0.6 FTE) to establish a new student evening congregation, SPC Unichurch.
The Dean of Melbourne, the Very Reverend Dr Andreas Loewe, said:
’St Paul’s is growing. Since the end of the Covid-pandemic, we have experienced an 11% growth in congregational attendance. We’re now looking to plant for further growth. Over the past five years, we’ve been exploring ways to establish a University ministry to serve Melbourne’s student population. In the CBD 50% of the population is of student age, and 54% identify as non-Christian. The establishment of SPC Unichurch presents a great opportunity to reach out to students living within a stone’s throw of the three spires of St Paul’s. We are excited to commence our search for a Church Planter/Curate who will share with us in our outreach’.
The role of Assistant Curate is a traditional training position for newly-ordained clergy, providing the necessary theological, spiritual, and leadership competencies required for leading a congregation as Vicar in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. As Assistant Curate, the successful applicant will share responsibility with the Dean and Cathedral clergy for leading worship, preaching and teaching, and exercising a ministry of pastoral care.
As Cathedral Church Planter, the successful applicant will take the lead in planning and preparing for the launch of a new student congregational plant, meeting on Sundays at St Paul’s and serving students at four local universities. They will work alongside Cathedral colleagues to establish ministry teams, shape the new plant’s vision, seek out mission partners, and develop and integrate a newcomer strategy in line with St Paul’s Strategic Plan and Discipleship Strategy.
