On Now: John Junor “Gospel Stories with a Sting”

A collection of paintings depicting iconic moments from the Gospels is on display now in the Transept Gallery at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Gospel Stories with a Sting is characteristic of Junor’s highly detailed and textural artistic style. Four large-scale paintings draw on a rich tradition of Christian visual art. They invite the viewer into a contemplative space with the freedom to take in meaning at their own pace. The paintings play with scale, light, shadows, and perspective. They unfold Gospel narrative. Those familiar with the stories may encounter new insights. Anyone unfamiliar with the Gospels will discover an accessible introduction to Christian stories.

John Junor is an artist with divided interests; painting, furniture making and wood turning. He studied fine arts at the Ballarat CAE in the mid 1970’s, then studied education and woodworking at Melbourne State College. Junor has worked for over four decades as an Art and Technology teacher across a wide range of secondary and primary schools in Melbourne.
