Artist Talk: Russell Shiells and Glenn Loughrey

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Join artists Russell Shiells and the Revd Canon Glenn Loughrey in the Transept gallery of St Paul’s Cathedral as Shiells shares his approach to art and storytelling.

Shiells’ large-scale paintings, on display in his exhibition Emigration / Immigration / Dispossession, aim to provoke discussion among viewers by drawing on emotive images and styles. He blends images from the earliest days of European arrival in Australia through to the present day to create themes that contrast privilege and disadvantage.

On Wednesday 22 May at 6pm, Russell Shiells will talk about his work, and will be joined in conversation by the Revd Canon Glenn Loughrey, whose portrait titled Am I black or white enough? (Shiells, 2023) features prominently in the exhibition.

Russell Shiells is a Melbourne-based artist, art teacher, and graphic designer. His particular interest in the way history shapes the present informs his work, often folding in personal experiences of place, relationships, and family.

The Revd Canon Glenn Loughrey is a Wiradjuri man, a priest, artist and author, and has special interest in indigenous issues. He has been a finalist in five major art prizes, and an author and co-author of three books.
