A Commemorative Ecumenical Choral Evensong will be held on Sunday, 31 July, at 6pm at St Paul’s Cathedral, to remember those who perished in recent days in München, Würzburg, Ansbach, and Rouen, and to pray for peace in our world.
The service will be led by Cathedral clergy and the Pastor of the Holy Trinity German Lutheran Church, Parliament Place, the Revd Christoph Dielmann. The Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany will be in attendance. Lessons will be read and hymns sung in both English and German.
The Dean of Melbourne, the Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, will preach. Dr Loewe was born in München. He said: ‘I believe that particularly in the light of such events, in the midst of mourning and anxiety, of uncertainty and hopelessness, it is vital that we reaffirm our faith in the God who assures, calls and equips us to live lives that speak of a greater good than ourselves’.
Dean Loewe added: ‘Each one of us can be God’s agents for peace in this world, by the works of faith, hope and love we do in God’s name. We are enabled to be God’s signs of peace regardless of terror and fear, whenever we choose to continue to pray, love and embrace even when others choose to hate, kill and exclude’.
Ecumenical clergy are warmly invited to robe. The liturgical colour is white. Heads of churches, consular representatives and other dignitaries should indicate their attendance to the Cathedral Secretary, Ms Hannah Hornsby (hhornsby@stpaulscathedral.org.au).
